Neighborhood Feel:

Logan Circle, which was named for Civil War Commander and Illinois State Senator John A. Logan in 1930, was originally known as Iowa Circle. The area is dotted with beautiful 19th Century and early 20th Century Victorian and Beaux Arts row houses and buildings, many converted to condos. You'll also find one of the city's only true loft areas around Church Street. Now a vibrant and popular residential area and social destination, from the 1970s through the 1990s Logan Circle was known for a different type of socializing as prostitutes were common in the area. However, revitalization took hold as people looking for the charm of Dupont Circle combined with affordability began moving into the Logan Circle area. Early on, it wasn't unusual to hear west side Logan Circle locations referred to as Dupont Circle East in an effort to trade on the cachet of its more established neighbor. Now residents proudly announce they live in Logan Circle, and, of course, housing prices have increased sharply since the revitalization. The opening of a Whole Foods Market in December 2000 had a great impact on the neighborhood. Today, Logan Circle is a vibrant mix of historic row homes, new condominiums, and a wide variety of retail shops and restaurants, both mainstream and funky. Logan Circle encompasses much of the eclectic U Street Corridor which provides the area with a several unique restaurants, music venues and clubs.
