The Petworth neighborhood has recently been on an upward swing. New restaurants and young professionals have contributed to the area's "revitalization" and "transformation." Needless to say, Petworth is an up-and-coming neighborhood. Petworth is more suburban than the typical downtown D.C. neighborhood since it consists mostly of row houses. This more suburban tradition has given Petworth a friendly "porch-conversation" feel. In recent years however, linear to Petworth's transition, more high-rise apartment buildings have been built in the area.

Originally, Petworth was the estate of Col. John Tayloe consisting of 204 acres and the 183 acre property of Marshall Brown. In the late 1880s, the properties became a part of the city and were purchased for development. The extension of the streetcar into Petworth, along Georgia Avenue, brought the neighborhood to life in 1892. Upwards from the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro Station many of the neighborhood's new developments are located including dining and bars.
